Geography

Geography at Romsey Abbey Primary School

How we teach geography:

Geography is about understanding the world. This begins with the early learning goals in Year R where we guide your child into making sense of their physical workd and their community by exploring, observing and finding out about people, places, technology and the environment. In Key Stage 1 the children will begin to use ICT, world maps, atlases and globes, simple compass directions, aerial photographs and plans, as well as simple fieldwork and observational skills in their project work. During Key Stage 2 the geography curriculum retains some flexibility, and builds and expands on previous knowledge. There are three focus areas:

  • Locational knowledge

  • Place knowledge

  • Human and physical geography

What you will see in classrooms:

  • Children learning specific skills related to geography - comparing locations; investigating; researching different sources; writing and talking about places and answering questions.

  • Children practicing transferable skills such as research, observation, measurement, recording and presentation.

  • The use of maps, atlases and globes, aerial photographs and plans.
