Maths at Romsey Abbey Church of England Primary School

How we teach maths:

At Romsey Abbey Primary School, we aim for all children to be learning the same objective where possible. This is based upon the aims of the National Curriculum.

“The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress should always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.”

We have high expectations of all children and a ‘can do’ attitude! All children are supported and challenged to develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts through developing their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.

What you will see in classrooms:

  • A belief that all children can achieve

  • Learning journeys that break down learning into achievable and understandable steps

  • Development of a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach to teaching and learning with multiple representations

  • Challenge for all through reasoning and problem solving

  • Talk for maths

  • Teachers and support staff who enthuse and encourage children to succeed and know their children well (strengths and next steps)
